Hunmanby lies directly between Scarborough and Bridlington
on the A165 looking down on the popular sea side resort of
Filey. The Village
is surrounded by stunning scenery and beautiful landscapes and has
always proved popular with visitors. Hunmanby is an ideal
base for your visit to the Yorkshire Coast and is a gateway to the
Yorkshire
Wolds.
Once listed as the largest village in Great Britain, today the
village still boasts its historic Market Place cross, signifying
the village's once substantial importance in Yorkshire trade.
A selection of public houses, café’s and restaurants lining the
main street ensure guests to the village are always well fed and a
small selection of quaint shopping outlets are available to
entertain throughout the day.
For those feeling a little more energetic, why not pay a visit
to Hunmanby’s Sport and Leisure Hall. Attractions including,
tennis, parkland walks, golf, bowls, indoor tennis, fitness gym,
basket ball, badminton and 5-a-side football are all on offer to
help work off those robust Yorkshire dinners.
For historians, overlooking the village lies Hunmanby
Castle, a Norman earthwork motte and bailey fortress, founded by
Gilbert de Gant. Destroyed in the 12th century, the large bailey
platform now only survives.
Numerous venues in Hunmanby hold an annual Hunmanby
Heritage Day every year in early September, as part of the National
Heritage Open Days scheme
Hunmanby is well served by public transport allowing visitors to
use the village as a base for exploring the area on foot or
bicycle. The railway station lies on the Yorkshire Coast
line between Scarborough and Hull and there is also
a regular bus service through this village, bus number
121.
