Out and About
Grosmont Grosmont

Grosmont is located within the Esk Valley about 5 miles from Whitby, off the A169. Grosmont was originally named Grandimont, taking its name from a small priory founded about 1200 which once stood by the north bank of the Esk. The prehistoric High and Low Bride Stones still stand on the moor, about a mile away, hinting at even earlier occupation.

Looking at Grosmont today, it is hard to believe it was once the site of a thriving ironstone industry, evidence of which can still be seen in the heavily wooded National Park car park.
