Out and About
Brompton

Brompton village is situated about eight miles from Scarborough, on the A170 Scarborough to Pickering road. This village is said to have once been a residence of the Northumbrian Kings. The foundations of an ancient building are still visible nearby on Castle Hill.

The village has one of the most beautiful, elegant, and spacious village churches in Yorkshire.

The patron of the church is the late Sir George Cayley. Born in Yorkshire in 1773, Cayley is the man described by aviation experts as the father of aeronautics. It was in Brompton Village in 1853, that Sir George's successfully tested the first manned flight in a fixed-wing aircraft.
