Council Wins Prestigious White Rose Award

Scarborough Borough Council is celebrating its success after scooping a prestigious White Rose Tourism Award.

At a tension filled glittering awards ceremony at the impressive Magna Science Adventure Centre near Rotherham, the Council’s tourism website discoveryorkshirecoast.com beat off strong competition from five other finalists across the region to win the Tourism Website of the Year category.

Cllr. David Jeffels, Portfolio Holder for Tourism and Leisure who attended the ceremony said:

“I am highly delighted at this fantastic accolade.  My congratulations go to both the Council’s Marketing and Communications and Web Services teams, which have put a tremendous amount of hard work into developing discoveryorkshirecoast.com into a first class and customer friendly website that is a real asset to the Borough of Scarborough and Yorkshire Coast tourism – even Harry Gration commented on how easy it is to navigate. It is a great achievement to win such a coveted award and it was wonderful to be able to share in the celebrations.”

The ceremony was presided over by Yorkshire Tourist Board’s Chairman Judith Donovan CBE and took place before an audience of over 550 people including finalists, supporters, invited guests and VIPs.  Yorkshire broadcasters and media personalities Harry Gration and Christa Ackroyd announced the awards and presentations were made by David Andrews, Chief Executive of Yorkshire Tourist Board accompanied by a representative from each category’s sponsoring company. The Website of the Year category was sponsored by NetConstruct Ltd.

The winning website now qualifies for entry in to the Enjoy England Excellence Awards to be held in Spring 2007 and the Council is looking forward to competing in this nationally recognised competition.

The other finalists in the Website of the Year category were:  Low Penhowe in Burythorpe, Malton, Thirkleby Hall Holiday Cottages, Thirsk, Thorney Mire Barn B&B in Appersett, Hawes, Wrea Head Country Cottages in Scalby and Yorkboat, York.
